Hip Pain

The hip joint also called as the ball and socket joint, can withstand a lot of wear and tear on extensive repetitive use. The hip joint ensures smooth movement of the hips with the help of cartilage which works as the cushion and helps in preventing friction of the bones as the ball moves inside the socket. As people become older, the hip joint as well the cartilage undergoes gradual wear and tear that damages the cartilage and reduces the cushioning effect that helps to avoid friction between the bones. Falls and injuries can fracture the hip bone which causes immense pain and requires orthopedic treatment including surgery to help recover. Often after the surgery the person is referred to the physiotherapist for rehabilitation.

In addition to the above, there are some common conditions which can cause hip pain:

Arthritis

Older adults experience hip pain due to osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis inflames the hip joint and the breakdown of the cushioning of the cartilage resulting in hip pain. Arthritis also causes muscle stiffness that inhibits movements and the range of motion. Usually pain increases with time.

Hip Fractures

Older people are vulnerable to slips and fall as they tend to lose body balance during movements. Slips and falls can be dangerous as they can cause some serious injuries. The already weak and brittle bones are most likely to break as the hip hits the ground during a fall. Hip fractures are extremely painful and often necessitate surgery to repair the broken joint which then relieves pain.

Strained Muscle or Tendon

Muscles, tendons, and ligaments that support the hip can become weak due to continuous strain or repetitive movement. Overuse leads to inflammation of the joint or the bursa or both that causes pain and prevents normal hip functions. Even condition called Iliotibial band syndrome is very common with all age groups where the IT band gets inflamed due to friction between band and the femur .Hip pain might spread to the adjoining areas like the groin, thigh, and buttocks. Some other common hip conditions are hip bursitis, Piriformis pain syndrome, hip tendonitis , hip dysplasia and avascular necrosis
